STOCK MARKET REVIEW

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) extended its strong start to the year on the back of price gains by eight (8) counters.

The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) inched up by 3.61 points (+0.04%) for the week to close at 8,811.11 points, reflecting a year-to-date (YTD) gain of 0.47%.  

The GSE Financial Index (GSE-FI) also gained 18.22 points (+0.39%) for the week to close at 4,687.52 points, reflecting a year-to-date (YTD) gain of 0.87%. 

Market capitalization grew marginally by 2.31% to close the week at GH¢176,231.62 million, from GH¢172,249.71 million at the close of the previous week. This reflects a YTD gain of 2.43%.

The week recorded a total of 44,196,397 shares, valued at GH¢189,199,253.95, compared with 21,546,466 shares valued at GH¢90,039,797.61 that were traded in the preceding week.

MTNGH dominated both the volume and value of trades for the week, accounting for 94.29% and 91.56% of the volume and value of shares traded, respectively.

CURRENCY MARKET

The Cedi depreciated against the USD for the week. It traded at GH¢10.8000/$, compared with GH¢10.7001/$ at week open, reflecting w/w and YTD depreciations of 0.93% and 3.24% respectively. This compares with a depreciation of 1.67% a year ago.  

The Cedi also depreciated against the GBP for the week. It traded at GH¢14.4639/£, compared with GH¢14.3760/£ at week open, reflecting w/w and YTD losses of 0.61% and 2.81% respectively. This compares with an appreciation of 0.91% a year ago.

The Cedi retreated against the Euro for the week. It traded at GH¢12.5392/€, compared with GH¢12.4738/€ at week open, reflecting w/w and YTD depreciations of 0.52% and 2.12% respectively. This compares with a depreciation of 1.19% a year ago.  

The Cedi lost ground against the Canadian Dollar for the week. It opened at GH¢7.7187/C$ and closed at GH¢7.7763/C$, reflecting w/w and YTD losses of 0.74% and 2.00%, respectively. This compares with a depreciation of 1.64% a year ago.

GOVERNMENT SECURITIES MARKET

The government raised a sum of GH¢10,057.04 million for the week across the 91-Day, 182-Day, and 364-Day Treasury Bills. This compares with GH¢9,082.93 million raised in the previous week.       

The 91-Day Bill settled at 11.19% p.a. from 11.17% p.a. last week, whilst the 182-Day Bill settled at 12.65% p.a. from 12.62% p.a. last week. The 364-Day Bill settled at 12.98% p.a. from 12.90% p.a. last week.

COMMODITY MARKET

Oil prices edged higher, as heightened concerns surrounding Iran and potential supply disruptions outweighed the prospect of increased crude supply from Venezuela. Brent futures traded at US$64.13 a barrel, compared to US$63.34 at week's open, reflecting w/w and YTD appreciations of 1.25% and 5.39% respectively.

Gold prices surged to all-time highs on increased safe-haven demand after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened new tariffs on a number of European nations over his push to acquire Greenland. Gold settled at US$4,595.40, from US$4,500.90 last week, reflecting w/w and YTD appreciations of 2.10% and 4.77% respectively.

The price of Cocoa decreased for the week. Cocoa traded at US$5,076.00 per tonne on Friday, from US$5,345.00 last week, reflecting w/w and YTD losses of 5.03% and 16.31% respectively.
