MTN Ghana has donated food items and cash totalling GH¢200,000 to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, in support of the 2026 Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
The donation, presented in Accra, formed part of the company’s annual support to the Muslim community as the holy month of Ramadan drew to a close.
Speaking during the presentation, the Chief Digital Officer of MTN Ghana, Ibrahim Misto, said that the gesture reflected the company’s appreciation to the Muslim community for its continued support over the years.
He noted that Ramadan represents a period of prayer, reflection, sacrifice and service to humanity, while Eid al-Fitr highlights values of generosity, empathy and togetherness.
Mr Misto said that MTN remained committed to strengthening its long-standing relationship with the Muslim community and supporting them during significant occasions.
“As part of our support for the Eid celebrations, MTN Ghana and MobileMoney Limited are presenting food items and cash totalling GH¢200,000 to the Muslim community in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale,” he said.
Items presented to the National Chief Imam included 30 bags of rice, one ram, 20 cartons of vegetable oil, 40 packs of mineral water, 10 packs of canned drinks, 10 packs of Bel plastic drinks, 10 packs of assorted plastic drinks, 10 trays of tinned milk, 10 bags of sugar, five boxes of tea bags and four boxes of sachet Milo (All-in-One Mix).
He added that the initiative also formed part of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations, marking three decades of service and connectivity in the country.
Mr Misto further announced that MTN and MobileMoney Limited would deploy customer engagement stands at selected locations during the Eid period to assist customers with Mobile Money transactions, registrations and education on fraud prevention.
In his remarks, the National Chief Imam expressed appreciation for the continued support from MTN Ghana and offered prayers for the company and the nation.
He prayed for peace, unity and harmony in Ghana, emphasising the importance of coexistence between people of different religious and cultural backgrounds.
The Chief Imam also called for humility and piety, noting that true honour lay in one’s devotion and adherence to the teachings of Allah.
Meanwhile, Senior Manager for Fintech Channels at MobileMoney Limited, Abdul-Majeed Rufai, used the occasion to highlight ongoing efforts to combat mobile money fraud.
He explained that most fraud cases were linked to social engineering tactics rather than system vulnerabilities.
According to him, fraudsters often deceive customers through fake promotions, false claims of mistaken transfers or requests for payments for supposed deliveries.
Mr Rufai said that MobileMoney Limited had intensified efforts to block fraudulent messages and educate customers through its “Shine Your Eye” campaign, which involves community outreach in local languages.
He outlined three key safety measures for customers: never disclose mobile money PINs, avoid engaging with unsolicited calls or messages claiming to be from MTN, and refrain from allowing others to perform transactions on their behalf.
He added that customers could report suspected fraud through the shortcode 419, noting that public awareness remained critical in reducing mobile money fraud.
The donation forms part of MTN Ghana’s broader corporate social responsibility efforts and its continued engagement with religious communities across the country during major festive periods.
