MTN Ghana has launched its 2026 Sustainability Month, expanding the initiative from a week-long observance to a month-long campaign aimed at embedding environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles across its operations while encouraging employees and stakeholders to drive the theme "small actions, big impact."
Speaking at the launch, MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Blewett, said that sustainability had become central to the company's long-term growth strategy and commitment to creating shared value.
He noted that the month-long programme, themed “Together for a Sustainable Future: Small Actions, Big Impact," reflected MTN's belief that responsible business practices must go beyond compliance to deliver lasting value for customers, communities, investors and the environment.
Mr. Blewett said that MTN's sustainability agenda was anchored on four pillars doing for the planet, doing for people, doing for growth and doing it right which aligned with the company's Ambition 2030 strategy.
He highlighted several milestones, including the rollout of biodegradable SIM cards to more than 4.7 million customers, preventing an estimated 10,288 kilograms of plastic waste, while Project Zero had exceeded its 2025 carbon reduction target with 3.02 megawatts of installed solar capacity powering more than half of the company's sites, offices and data centres.
The CEO also noted that over the past five years MTN Ghana had invested more than US$1 billion in network expansion, supported SMEs through initiatives including its Mini-MBA programme with Absa Bank and Nova Business School, and continued to promote inclusion through the MTN Ghana Foundation and Yellow Care volunteer programme.
He added that the Sustainability Month would feature activities such as environmental initiatives, employee development programmes and home gardening projects aimed at encouraging individuals to contribute to climate action and economic resilience.
"Sustainability is not a department. It is a discipline. Small actions, big impact," he said.
Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Wiafe, said that this year's campaign marked the third major sustainability initiative by MTN Ghana.
She explained that the expanded programme would include lunch-and-learn sessions, visits to recycling facilities, tree planting exercises and discussions on ESG, all designed to encourage employees to incorporate sustainable practices into their daily routines.
Ms. Wiafe also noted that the initiative coincided with Ghana's transition towards the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Sustainability Disclosure Standards S1 and S2, with S1 requiring companies to disclose sustainability-related risks and opportunities that could affect their financial performance, while S2 focuses specifically on climate-related risks, opportunities and greenhouse gas emissions.
Immediate Past President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), Sena Dake, commended MTN Ghana for placing sustainability at the centre of its business strategy.
She said that sustainability had evolved beyond policy discussions to become a key driver of competitiveness, long-term value creation and business resilience.
Ms. Dake observed that global losses from disasters reached US$320 billion in 2024, underscoring the growing importance of sustainable business practices.
She urged organisations to move beyond regulatory compliance by embedding sustainability into everyday decisions and encouraged employees to make personal commitments that would collectively contribute to meaningful impact.
She further noted that Ghana's roadmap for adopting the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards would require significant public interest entities, including listed companies, to begin mandatory sustainability reporting from January 1, 2027, following the end of the voluntary adoption period this year.
The Sustainability Month forms part of MTN Ghana's broader commitment to responsible growth as the company marks 30 years of operations in Ghana, with activities throughout the month expected to reinforce environmental stewardship, community development, ethical leadership and inclusive economic growth.
