When Does 'black-ish' Come Back For Season 6? Tracee Ellis Ross Teases 'Girlfriends' Reunion and More Spoilers
In an era when so many classic sitcoms and drama shows have been rebooted and revived, fans have hoped for the return of The CW's iconic series, Girlfriends. And their prayers will finally be answered—well, sort of.
The cast of Kelsey Grammer's hit series will reunite for the first time since the Girlfriends Season 8 finale in 2008 on the upcoming new season of ABC's black-ish. Tracee Ellis Ross announced Thursday her gal pals and former castmates Persia White, Golden Brooks and Jill Marie Jones would appear in a "feminist episode" on black-ish Season 6.
Black-ish is set to return to ABC on September 24 at 9:30 p.m. ET, right after the premiere of its spinoff series mixed-ish, based on Ross' character Rainbow. The Girlfriends crew is expected to make their debut on black-ish on the October 8 episode titled, "Feminisn't."
"The timing was perfect to be able to bring Girlfriends to a whole new audience. We haven't all be together on camera since 2006," Ross told Entertainment Weekly in an interview released Thursday. "Girlfriends ran for eight years and was important to so many people. Being able to merge the worlds of black-ish and Girlfriends was surreal for me—and so much fun. These are women I grew up with and love deeply and it was easy to tap back into the magic of our chemistry and how much we love each other. It was giggles on top of giggles on top of giggles."
White, Brooks and Jones are slated to play Rainbow's girlfriends whom she invites to a meeting with her feminist group in an effort to help the organization appear more inclusive, according to the episode synopsis. The purpose of the meeting is to encourage Bow's daughter Diane (Marsai Martin) and mother-in-law Ruby (Jennifer Lewis) to identify as feminists, but, of course, the convincing won't come without a few bumps and bruises along the way.
Season 6 of black-ish is expected to be filled with the many hilarious teaching moments the TV family is known for. Chaos is slated to rear its head in the Johnson household as early as the premiere episode when Pops (Laurence Fishburne) surprisingly introduces the family to his new fiancée Lynette, played by Loretta Devine.
Meanwhile, fans should expect to see more off-the-wall antics at Dre's (Anthony Anderson) ad agency now that Jeff Meacham, who stars as Dre's friend and common sense-less co-worker Josh, is returning for Season 6 as a series regular.
