At least 18 people were killed when a fire broke out in a multi-storey market in the eastern India city of Kolkata Wednesday, officials said.
The paper and plastics market was illegally constructed and unauthorized, state Fire Minister Javed Khan said.
"There could be more people trapped inside and rescue operations are on," police officer N Sanyal said.
He said the fire was likely caused by a short-circuit, and the emergency exits were locked.
More than a dozen injured people were taken to hospital, IANS news agency reported.
