Obuasi Municipal Assembly (OMA) is to undertake a two-year school infrastructure development project with the aim of terminating the shift system.
The project would comprise mainly rehabilitation of dilapidated schools and constructing new ones.
Mr John Alexander Ackon, the Municipal Chief Executive, who announced this at an end-of-year get-together organised by the staff of the Municipal Education Directorate, expressed worry that most of the schools in the area were in bad state.
"Currently a government programme aimed at addressing problems associated with schools under trees, shift system as well as those without toilet and other facilities are on-going and we have submitted our data with pictures for action," he said.
The MCE said already the assembly had spent over GH¢30,000 to rehabilitate the Kwabena Fori Primary School, whilst three unit classroom
blocks and a six-classroom block had been built at Kunka, Asonkore and Anyinam respectively.
Mr Ackon said he was pleased that Obuasi came first in the national ranking of 2009 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), adding that, "we should be looking at more achievements in education. I think the education directorate has done very well".
Mr Kofi Bimpong, the Municipal Director of Education, called for commitment, dedication and co-operation from educational workers in the
Municipality to help sustain the achievements so far gained.
He said the 95.81 per cent success recorded by the Municipal as against 89.62 by the second-placed, Ga East, was an indication that "Obuasi
has come to stay at the first position and there should be no turning back." Mr Bimpong, however, urged the stakeholders of education in the
Municipality to work hard to achieve more results.
He said "we should not lose focus as managers of education in this Municipality".
