The Non-formal Education Division (NFED) of the Ministry of Education in the Kwaebibirem District has stepped up its efforts to train more people to read and write English.
According to the District Co-ordinator of the NFED, Ms Patricia Ansah, between 2006 and 2008, English classes were organized for 161 neo-literates.
Eighty-nine of them were males and 72 females and explained that neo-literates were those who have graduated from basic classes where they acquired reading, writing and numeracy skills in Twi to help them in their daily lives.
The District Co-ordinator said about 70 per cent of those enrolling in the English classes could now write, compute and communicate in that language and expressed her appreciation to the seven facilitators who handled them.
She said there were 228 learners in the basic classes in Twi between 2006 and 2008 made up of 77 males and 151 females in seven communities in the district.
Ms Ansah said in all about 70 per cent of the learners were able to complete their studies successfully.
