The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) are organizing a re-training programme for teachers of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
Mr Samuel Bannerman-Mensah, the Director General of the GES, said this in an address read on his behalf at the 40th anniversary and fifth speech and prize giving day of the Boso Senior High Technical School in the Asuogyaman District.
He said the re-training programme was aimed at improving the performance of teachers in those core subject areas.
Mr Bannerman-Mensah said the government was upgrading the status of workshops in all technical schools and with time, all their requirements would be taken care of.
"Government is also providing additional facility for institutions to further enhance access and equity and this is one of the institutions that are to benefit from recent projects approved for schools"
Prof Alexander Nyarko, Director of Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research who was the guest speaker, stressed the importance of
science education and said "Today's world is driven by science and technology and there cannot be any meaningful technology without strong
scientific grounding".
He said technical programme must be complemented by a strong program in science.
Mr Johnson Ahiakpor, Asuogyaman District Chief Executive, said the government had awarded on contract the construction of girls' dormitory
block for the school.
Mr Ahiakpor suggested to the school authorities to make it a policy for each student to plant a tree every year on the school campus to serve as windbreak.
Mr N.K.Afunyah, the Headmaster, mentioned lack of dormitories for boys and girls, science and administrative block, staff bungalows, assembly hall, dinning hall/kitchen complex and standard playing field as some of the challenges facing the institute.
He said all Senior High Schools in the country are faced with the lack of facilities that would enable them to admit first year students in October.
Mr Afunyah suggested to the government to direct the Metropolitan, Municipal and District assemblies to set aside funds to be used to provide some of the facilities needed to admit the new students.
