The Akim Swedru circuit court in the Birim south district, has imposed a fine of GH500 on Kwame Adam, a driver, for stealing a Motorola W375 mobile phone belonging to Mr Richard Yaw Nkansah, a farmer.
Mr Kofi Akrowiah, the presiding judge, ruled that Adam, 26, who pleaded guilty to stealing, will go to prison for twelve months if he fails to pay
the fine.
The court heard that Mr Nkansah lived at Akim Aboabo, while Adam lived at Akim Asene both in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern region.
The prosecution stated that on May 8, this year, at about 1300 hours, Mr Nkansah and his family joined a taxi cab with registration number GR1307T from Akim Oda to Akim Aboabo and when they alighted Mr Nkansah detected that his mobile phone had been stolen.
The complainant sought for another mobile phone to call his number with the view to retrieving it, but the phone was switched off, this gave him strong suspicion that the phone was stolen in the car.
Later, Mr Nkansah caused the arrest of Adam whose brother managed to retrieve the phone wrapped in black polythene and concealed in the car.
The culprit was handed over to the police.
