Climate Hero, Chinese photographer Luo Hong, announced Saturday the name of one of two baby gorillas in Rwanda to mark World Environment Day.
The names were chosen by online votes and Luo announced the winning selection of Wakawaka, which means sunshine.
The other selected name Zoya was announced by Hollywood actor Don Cheadle.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame and UN Environment Program Director Achim Steiner attended the ceremony that was full of celebration.
The naming ceremony, commonly known as Kwita Izina, is an ancient Rwandan tradition that has been extended from human beings to the country's
cherished and endangered gorillas, aiming at ensuring the future of Rwanda's mountain gorillas and bringing global awareness to gorillas and their habitats.
Luo was named a Climate Hero by the UN Environment Program in 2009.
He has long devoted himself to shooting natural environments and wild animals. Many of his works are frequently auctioned for charity with
proceeds benefiting environmental causes.
He established the Luo Hong Environment Foundation in 2006 to educate and reward young people worldwide for environment protection.
Established in 1972 and celebrated every June 5, World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment.
