The Tema Metropolitan Office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has asked residents in flood-prone areas in the Metropolis to relocate to safer areas during this rainy season.
The flood-prone areas in the Tema Metropolis include Zenu, Chemu Lagoon area, Communities 16; 17; 18; 19 and 20.
Hajia Zenabu Abdulai, Tema NADMO Co-ordinator, pleaded with the residents, especially those residing near the dam site at Zenu, to relocate to prevent the occurrence of any disaster during a heavy downpour.
She gave the advice on Monday in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.
Hajia Abdulai also urged residents of lowland areas in Communities 18, 19 and 20, to move upstream as the lowland areas always got flooded resulting in destruction of properties.
The NADMO Co-ordinator, however, stated that her outfit was yet to record any heavy flooding this year.
She attributed the flood free season to the series of sensitization and clean-up exercises organized by NADMO for residents in the flood-prone areas in the Metropolis.
She reiterated the call on residents to desist from building on waterways, dumping of refuse in drains, as well as blocking waterways with building debris.
Hajia Abdulai added that to ensure the free flow of rain water, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has constructed and repaired some drains in the Metropolis.
She indicated that the Assembly has assured NADMO of an up-coming demolishing exercise this month, to pull down structures located on
waterways to bring some sanity into the system.
The Tema NADMO Coordinator, however, announced that residents could contact the NADMO rescue team on telephone numbers 0208127869 and 0299350032 in case of any incident.
Hajia Abdulai also cautioned developers and individuals to desist from using sub-standard materials in building, to avoid the recurrence of
buildings collapsing on people.
She said the occurrence of such incidents was becoming alarming in the country.
