KPMG (Ghana), a Non Governmental Organisation committed to the development of education in needy educational institutions, on Friday donated a Braille Embosser valued at GH6,700.00 to the Wa Methodist School for the Blind at Wa.
Presenting the equipment to the School, Mrs. Dorothy Donkor, Marketing Manager of KPMG (Ghana), said the donation was to help ease the difficulties faced by the School in acquiring prescribed recommended text books.
Mrs. Donkor said KPMG (Ghana) had since 2006 made several donations to Wa School for the Blind in the form of learning aids including prescribed
Braille books worth over GH20,000.00 as part of its corporate citizenship initiative.
The Marketing Manager said this year KPMG (Ghana), identified the Braille Embosser as one of the most pressing needs of the School, and had
therefore made efforts to acquire the equipment for the school.
She said the initiative to support the School began after the Society for the Blind in Accra, pointed out the desperate need of the equipment in the School, to enhance basic teaching and leaning.
Explaining the functions of the Braille Embosser, Mrs. Donkor said it was essentially a printer that rendered text as Braille on special Braille paper.
She added that, the modern version of the equipment was capable of printing on normal paper thereby eliminating the cost of acquiring special
Braille paper which was thicker and more expensive.
She stressed that most institutions could not afford such special equipment and materials because they were expensive and were not produced in Ghana.
Mrs. Donkor said as a result of this, most Schools in the country were ill-equipped for the special needs of the physically challenged.
Mr. Sampson Akurugu, Headmaster of the School, thanked KPMG (Ghana), for the donation, and urged them to continue to support the school to give quality education to the pupils.
He said the donation of the equipment had brought the number to two with the other one donated by Force Foundation.
He pledged on behalf of his staff and students to commit the equipment to good use to further raise the standards of education in the School.
