A 39-year-old unemployed, who stole Police uniform and used it to extort money from the public, was on Monday sentenced to 36-months imprisonment by a Circuit Court in court.
Anthony Ayormi, who was charged with stealing and impersonation, pleaded guilty.
Accused told the court that he came to Accra for an interview but was stranded and therefore decided to pass the night at Redco flats at Madina.
Ayormi said that his clothes in a bag got wet and he wore another uniform only to realise that the Police emblem was embossed on the jacket.
The court rejected his explanation and convicted him and ordered that the Police uniform be given to the complainant.
Police Chief Inspector Peter Benneh told the court that complainant was a Police Corporal stationed at Agbogba while accused had no permanent place of abode.
On June 14, this year, Ayormi entered the Police rented apartment at Redco Flats in Madina, Accra, and stole a Police uniform on a drying line.
Chief Inspector Benneh said that on July 14, complainant was passing and saw accused struggling with some people because they were smoking Indian hemp, and demanded GH70 from the suspects.
The Prosecution said that complainant, who saw accused dressed in the Police uniform, decided to assist him to apprehend the suspects.
Chief Insp. Benneh said that accused introduced himself as Detective Sergeant Anthony Ayormi with Ghana Police Service with ID number 35601.
However, on reaching Madina Police Station, accused was identified as a civilian who had earlier been arrested and detained in connection with a theft case.
When quizzed, accused confessed, saying because he had no money on him, he decided to wear the Police uniform to extort money from people.
