Eight chainsaw operators, including a woman,
have been arrested by the Suhum police for allegedly assaulting a timber merchant, Mr Owusu Dome and attempting to murder him.
According to the Suhum District Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Anane Appiah, the suspects were identified and arrested when they confessed their crime to the chief of Brong-Densuso Number One, a farming community in the area.
The chief in turn handed the suspects over to the police on condition that the case would be settled at home.
The suspects were identified as Sammy Macho, Yaw Mann, Yekini, Tettey Cobbina, Kofi Adjei, Yaw Dunyo and Sandra.
One Ebenezer, a driver, who conveyed the suspects to assault the victim, is at large but the vehicle had been impounded by the police.
The District Commander told the Ghana News Agency that the police are continuing with their investigations into the case, after which the suspects would be arraigned.
On May 19, Mr Owusu Dome had closed from work and was travelling from Akwadum to Suhum in a public vehicle, when the suspects pursued him and
raised the false alarm that he was a thief.
The driver therefore handed over the victim to the suspects, who assaulted him at Nankese and later tied a rope around his neck and threatened to kill him for frustrating their chainsaw operations.
Luck eluded the suspects when shouts of the victim led to his rescue by sympathisers.
The suspects however threw Mr Dome out of the vehicle and he managed to escape.
He sustained injuries and was rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital by the Good Samaritans where he was treated and discharged and later made a report to the police.
