About 100 members of the Industrial and Commercial Workers union (ICU) in the Volta Region, on Thursday stage a demonstration through the principal streets of Ho to protest increases in utility tariffs.
The demonstrators clad in red shirts, arm bands and wielding placards, converged at the Regional Co-ordinating Council premises in Ho and presented a petition to Colonel Cyril Necku, Deputy Volta Regional Minister.
Some of the placards read, "Uncle Atta please wake up, what does the future hold for workers," and "PURC, is your survey genuine?"
Presenting the petition, Mr Ernest Otu-Addo, the Regional ICU Officer, said that the ICU was not against increase in tariffs but it was concern
about the level of the increase.
He said that the increases were too high compared to workers salaries and asked government to intervene to save economic entities from collapsing.
Mr Otu-Addo told GNA that if nothing was done about the tariffs next week the ICU would advice itself.
Col. Necku commended the demonstrators for going about their protest peacefully and gave the assurance that government would consider their concerns.
