A 70-year-old farmer appeared in court for stealing five Ghana cedis worth of plantain after which he fiercely resisted lawful arrest and caused unlawful damage to a wrist watch of a
public officer detailed to arrest him.
Yaw Nkansah alias Yakubu, who pleaded guilty to both resisting arrest and causing unlawful damage, but pleaded not guilty to stealing, has been fined GH�100.00 by a magistrate court at Akim Oda.
Giving the ruling, the presiding Judge, Mr Albert Owusu Annor, stated that Nkansah would serve a six-month prison term, if he failed to pay the fine.
Police Chief Inspector Kwadwo Ahenkorah told the court that the complainant, Mr Samuel Denteh and Nkansah who are both farmers lived at Akim
Asene in the Birim Central Municipality.
He said on August 2, this year, Mr Denteh received a phone call from one Mr Samuel Owusu and Mr Yaw Owusu that they had arrested Nkansah for stealing a bunch of plantain from his (Denteh�s) farm.
That Nkansah pulled a knife and threatened: �Anyone who dares to touch me, would be stabbed.� Hence, when Mr Denteh arrived at the farm Nkansah had fled leaving the plantains behind.
Chief Inspector Ahenkorah said Mr Denteh went to report the matter to the police with the exhibits and Detective Corporal Alex Antwi was detailed for Nkansah�s arrest but Nkansah fiercely resisted and also caused damage to
his wrest watch valued at GH�10.00.
