Dr Teddy Kofi Avotri, Sekondi -Takoradi Metropolitan Director of Health, has urged parents, guardians and caregivers to make sure that children from nine months to five years under their care are immunized in the National
Measles Vaccination Campaign, slated for November 3 to 6, this year.
He made the call at a media briefing on the Measles
Supplementary Immunization Activities (SIA) at Sekondi.
The theme for the Measles Immunization Campaign was: "Measles can kill, immunize your child now."
Dr. Avotri said because measles is one of the child killer diseases in Ghana every child should be immunized to prevent the spread of the disease.
He said measles had health complications that tend to have negative Long-term effects on children not immunized.
Dr. Avotri said that the country had not recorded any case of measles for the past eight years and efforts must be made to consolidate this achievement.
Dr. Avotri urged the media and stakeholders to assist to sensitize the public on the campaign to ensure its success in the metropolis and the country as a whole.
He said measles vaccination is undertaken every four years in the country and advised parents to actively get involved by sending their
children to the designated centres to be vaccinated, saying, "if you fail to immunize your child this year then you have to wait till another four years before you will get the opportunity to vaccinate your child against the disease."
Dr. Avotri said the Metro Health Directorate had begun training health workers and volunteers for the campaign, adding that, about 70,000 children are expected to be vaccinated in the metropolis and over 500,000 nationwide.
Mr. Nicolas Asare Adomako, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Disease Control Officer, said the Ghana Health Service is targeting over 90 per cent nationwide coverage and over 80 per cent coverage in the districts.
He said immunization posts would be set up in all communities, health centres and hospitals in the metropolis.
