Pitching for greater eco-friendly initiatives, former US Vice President Al Gore Saturday said India can lead the way in adopting energy efficient solutions for everyday needs and accelerate a shift to alternate fuels.
"India has a tremendous opportunity to lead the world in energy efficient solutions and in effecting a rapid shift to use of alternate energy like wind and solar," Gore said, addressing the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit.
Favouring use of photo-voltaic technology for solar energy, he said greater use of such devices to turn sunlight into electric current would spur research in the field and also help lower cost.
"In the long run, solar energy is the most important of this remedial options as it comes in many forms like water heaters, lanterns," Gore said.
He said the use of photo-voltaic cells was the best option to convert into electric current and a greater demand for this technology could spur growth of companies and research opportunities in countries like Germany, Taiwan and India.
When pointed out that the US, a major polluter, was still lagging behind in implementing green laws, Gore sought to put the blame on anti-climate lobbies active in his country.
"There are six anti-climate lobbyists for every member of the Senate," he said, adding that such interest groups were making an organised attempt to change the public opinion on climate change by creating false doubts on climate science.
Gore, who shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize joint award with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said the anti-climate lobbies were backed by billions of dollars from the carbon polluting industries in the US.
"They believe that by deceiving people and creating false doubts climate science, they can delay legislation," he said.
