The Kade District Magistrate Court, presided over by Mr Abdul Majid Iliasu, on Wednesday sentenced a driver, William Obeng, to a fine of GH¢600 for breaking six road traffic regulations.
In default, Obeng, who pleaded guilty to all but one of the six counts, would go to prison for 18 months in hard labour.
He faced charges of overloading his vehicle, failing to provide proper seating accommodation, use of motor vehicle with expired insurance, obscured number plate, use of vehicle without side driving mirror and failing to produce driving license.
Prosecuting, Police Inspector Francis Cobbina said on November 2, 2010 as part of nationwide exercise to check indiscipline drivers, the Kade
Police Command sent police to track down such drivers and bring them to book.
During the exercise, the accused was among a number of drivers arrested for various motor offences.
The prosecutor explained that at about 0710 hours that day, Obeng then being in charge of Hyundai bus with registration number GS 6256 Z carried 22 persons instead of the 12 allowed.
He, therefore, failed to provide proper seating accommodation for 10 of the passengers.
The accused also drove his motor vehicle with expired insurance certificate, failed to produce his driving license for inspection within 24
hours when required to do so.
The vehicle also had defective rear number plate, which had no driving mirror.
