Police will suggest the government to reinforce the state of emergency if the protests in the capital become out of control, police chief said on Wednesday.
The national police chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree made the remarks amid the ongoing rally by the yellow-clad People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) and its political faction --Thai Patriots Network (TPN) -- to put pressure on the government over the border issues with Cambodia.
He said police would definitely not allow the protesters to intrude into Government House or the parliament.
PAD and its allies started mass rally against the government since Tuesday demanding the government to revoke the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with Cambodia in 2000 as a demarcation framework, to withdraw membership of the World Heritage Convention and to drive Cambodian soldiers and people out of disputed areas.
Pol Gen Wichean added that police had already conceded a lot to the protesters, particularly by allowing them to set up a stage and shut roads around the protest site.
He said if the situation blew out, he would ask the government to reinvoke the enforcement of emergency decree.
The state of emergency, initially imposed in April 2010 to cope with the escalating protest of the anti-government "red-shirt" group, was finally lifted in Bangkok and its vicinity on Dec. 22 last year after it had been in force for over eight months.
