Animal rights group 'People for Ethical Treatment of Animals' (PETA) has launched a campaign to promote vegetarianism, featuring internationally
renowned 92-year-old Yoga guru B K S Iyengar.
The campaign with the slogan "energise your mind, body and spirit" carries the picture of Iyengar with his call "Go vegetarian."
"If animals died to fill my plate, my head and my heart would become heavy with sadness... becoming vegetarian is the way to live in harmony with animals and planets," a press release from PETA India quoted Iyengar.
The campaigners said the United Nations recognised that raising animals for food is a serious contributor for environmental problems.
While being taken to slaughter houses, the animals are often crammed into vehicles in such high numbers that many of them break their bones and some suffocate on their way, PETA said.
