The Akim Oda Magistrate Court on Thursday convicted a farmer on charges of stealing, causing unlawful damage and causing unlawful
harm.
Emmanuel Kwesi Appiagyei pleaded guilty to the charges and was accordingly sentenced upon his own plea to a fine of GH¢100.
He would go to prison for 18 months if he defaults in payment.
The court, presided over Mr Albert Owusu Annor ordered the convict to pay GH¢50.00 to Mr Kwesi Obeng, a driver, the side glass of whose KIA truck was smashed, and another GH¢50.00 to Mr Yaw Asomaning a passenger, whose fingers were bit during a scuffle with the convict.
Prosecuting, Inspector Wilberforce Kwaku Appiah told the court that Mr Yaw Appianing a farmer and also the complainant, is a native of Akim Swedru but lives at Akim Aduasa, while Appiagyei also a farmer, lives at Akim Aduasa.
Inspector Appiah stated that on February 13, this year at about 1240 hours, the complainant visited his farm at Ninta near Akim Aduasa and spotted Appiagyei loading plantain, cassava and cocoyam worth GH¢20.00 into a fertilizer sack.
Mr Appianing, therefore, confronted Appiagyei who was escorted with the food items to Akim Aduasa town.
The prosecutor said Appianing engaged the services of Mr Obeng, a driver of the KIA truck with registration number GW 1843 X to convey the convict and the foodstuff to the Akim Swedru Police Station, adding that Appiagyei was made to sit between the driver and Mr Asomaning, a passenger on the front seat.
He said at Akim Swedru, the convict intentionally stepped on the brake of the vehicle and fiercely resisted going to the Police Station and in the process smashed a side glass of the
truck and also bit two fingers on the passenger’s right hand.
Inspector Appiah said Appiagyei managed to flee to his house at Akim Aduasa, but he was later arrested by the Police.
