Jose Graziano da Silva, the Brazilian candidate for director-general of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), submitted his program to the organization Wednesday,Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
As a senior official of FAO, Graziano had submitted his program during the 141st Session of the FAO Council in Rome, the statement said.
According to the statement, eradicating hunger, sustainable food production and consumption, greater balance in the management of food systems, concluding FAO's reform process and increasing South-South cooperation are the five pillars of his program.
Before joining the FAO, Graziano helped design and implement the Brazilian Zero Hunger initiative at the beginning of this century, which has contributed to lifting 24 million Brazilians out of extreme poverty from 2003 to 2010.
The process to choose the FAO's new director-general will start at the 37th FAO Conference in Rome in late June, and the successful candidate
will hold the post from January 1, 2012 to July 31, 2015.
The other candidates are Franz Fischler from Austria, Indroyono Soesilo from Indonesia, Mohammad Saeid Noori Naeini from Iran, Abdul Latif Rashid from Iraq and Miguel Angel Moratinos Cuyaube from Spain.
All candidates were nominated by their governments.
