Professor Akosua Adomako Ampofo, Director, Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, on Friday urged the media to portray women in a more positive manner to promote their socio economic development and earn the respect of men.
“It is very vital for all and sundry to portray women in a more positive manner in order to send the right signals to others to earn their respect,” she added.
Professor Adomako made the call when addressing a forum on how women were being portrayed in the media and called on advertising agencies,film producers and musicians to be circumspective in the sort of messages they tend to send across about women in their operations.
The forum was organised by the Centre for Communication and Culture,an NGO aimed at promoting cultural development through advocacy and training for creators and critics of culture.
Prof Adomako called for the removal of legal barriers inhibiting the well-being of women and children in the country.
Ahaji Ibrahim Tijani, Director of Finance and Administration, Ministry of Chieftaincy and Culture, reiterated government’s commitment towards the elimination of all forms of abuse against women and children.
“Although government has a policy to encourage girls’ education, we are totally against any suggestion that girls should abuse themselves to climb the academic ladder,” he added.
Alhaji Tijani commended women for their hard work, enterprising and economically independence and urged the media to endeavour to portray them in positive light.
The participants who were mostly women empowerment activists discussed issues militating against the well-being of women and children in the country.
