Ghanaians have been urged to maintain the highest level of environmental hygiene to prevent avoidable disasters with the onset of the raining season.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Odododiodioo Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Daniel Nii Okai, said Ghanaians should avoid littering and indiscriminate
dumping of refuse, especially of plastic wastes.
He noted that most of the refuse indiscriminately dumped end up to choke gutters and
drains, which lead to floods during downpours.
Mr Okai, who is a member of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) said littering
and indiscriminate dumping apart from compounding the refuse problem in most urban areas, also contributed to the outbreak of epidemics such as cholera which becomes breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which lead to malaria.
He appealed to churches and other religious organizations to play an active role in ensuring environmental sanitation because of the influence they have on their congregation.
Mr Okai also called on teachers to inculcate good sanitation practices among their pupils and students at an early age.
He said, they should also encourage and promote civic education and good morales in
collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in their pupils and students to make them good citizens needed for national development.
He advised pedestrians, especially school children to use zebra crossings when crossing roads and also advised commercial drivers to respect and comply with road traffic regulations and signs.
Mr Okai asked the National Road Safety Commission to intensify their campaign in
schools to reduce fatalities on roads.
