According to him, such move would have positive effect on salaries, employment and security among others. Mr. Kotei made the call at a day’s workshop for media practitioners for selected media houses in Accra.

It aims at educating them on labour issues and also sought for their support to ensure that all media practitioners were unionised.The programme organised by the ICU-Ghana was in collaboration with the Union Network International.

The General Secretary said union members should not only consider the wellbeing of its workers but should consider the progress of their organisations.

Mr. Kotei said the labour management partnership will bring about open dialogue, exchange of ideas and the ability to adapt and respond to change.

Mr. Kotei urged participants to ensure that their colleagues who are not in the industrial unions need to be unionised for their rights to be protected.

“We all have to be crusaders to encourage others to get into the unions to ensure that their rights were protected,” he said.

Mr. Kotei said research had shown that most of the journalists are not paid salaries, medical bills and social security and described it as a serious problem which has to be dealt with.

He said safest place to work is where they have a union to ensure that rights of the workers are not infringed upon.”

The General Secretary noted that even those in unions still struggled with labour acts and collective agreements at the workplaces.Mr. Kortei assured unions of the ICU’s continuous support in helping them achieve their goals.

The Principal Education Officer of ICU-Ghana, Mr. Emmanuel Yabani, urged union leaders to meet workers regularly to educate them on company and union policies.He said workers should also do their part by going about their responsibilities at their workplaces.
