The CBE programme afforded the 9,139 out of school children, comprising 5,118 boys and 4,021 girls, the opportunity to acquire basic literacy and numeracy skills within a period of nine months (January to September) in their mother-tongues to facilitate their enrolment into the formal school system.

Plan International Ghana, a child-centered non-governmental organisation, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, implements the CBE programme under a project dubbed: Reaching and Teaching Out-of-School Children (REACH), sponsored by Educate a Child, an NGO.

The beneficiary districts included Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo, Chereponi, Tatale/Sanguli, Tamale Metropolis, and Wa Municipal.
Mr. Sulemana Hor Gbana, the Project Manager at the Northern Programme Support Office of Plan International Ghana, told the GNA that work was ongoing to ensure that at least 70 per cent of the CBE learners were enrolled into the formal school system.

Mr. Hor Gbana said teachers had been trained on integration of CBE learners into formal schools adding that bursary support was also provided to needy children including teaching and learning materials.

He expressed the need for national and district partners to urgently address the situation of lack of schools in many of the communities to ensure that the CBE learners were properly absorbed.

REACH project is a five-year (2015 -2020) partnership between Plan International Ghana and the Ministry of Education with sponsorship from Educate a Child to address the out-of-school problem in the country.
