Zoomlion Ghana Limited has cleared the heaps of refuse left uncollected at Atomic Junction at Madina in Accra following the gas explosion there last Saturday.
A section of the site where the explosion occurred was cleared of filth and other waste products.
The other section, particularly the place where traders abandoned their wares and fled to safety during the explosion, was left untouched because police investigations are still ongoing.
The exercise, which is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility, was undertaken with assistance from the La Nkwantanang Municipal Assembly.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic on Wednesday, the Public Coordinator of Zoomlion in charge of the Accra Region, Mr Seth Adzrako, said the company was ready to assist the authorities to maintain the place once investigations were completed.
Background
Last Saturday, a gas explosion at Atomic Junction led to the death of seven people and injury to about 130 others.
The incident, which occurred around 7:30 p.m., shook the capital and brought its entire night life to a halt.
The cause of the explosion is yet to be established by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
After the incident, a section of Atomic Junction got engulfed in waste, ranging from plastics to broken equipment.
Mr Adzrako said the management of Zoomlion Ghana Limited decided to undertake a clean-up exercise at the place.
“We have cleared the heaps of refuse left uncollected at some parts of Atomic Junction. We will wait for the police to finish their investigations and clear the other parts,” he said.
