The Tema Metropolitan Assembly in the Greater Accra Region has been placed first with the highest score of 80 per cent in the last year’s District League Table (DLT).
The Lambussie Karni district in the Upper West Region had also been adjudged the most improved District of DLT, last year with 23 score per cent points due to increases in its sanitation and health indicators.
Madam Mildred Edinam Adzraku, Research Officer of CDD-Ghana in Tamale announced this in Tamale during the post-launch of the 2017 District League Table (DLT). The DLT project post-launch by Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) and the UNICEF-Ghana was to share the outcomes and lessons learnt from the four years of implementing the DLT project to stakeholders.
She mentioned that other Districts have also increased in their scores, which included Ekumfi in the Central Region by 20 per cent due to increases in education and health indicators. According to Madam Adzraku, Afadzato South in the Volta Region also increased by 19 per cent due to improvement in education, sanitation, health and security indicators.
She stated that in all, 190 districts managed to improve their score while 26 districts scored worse as compared to the last two years. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Madam Evelyn Ngaanuma, Programme Officer of UNICEF in Tamale, appealed to the central government to allocate resources to the district assemblies to improve on their performance.
She encouraged district assemblies to take action to the next level and also use data to understand how best to prioritise limited resources to learn from faster developing districts. The DLT project was implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) and the Office of the Head of Local Government Service (OHLGS).
The project was to look for assess, compare and measure the level of development in the provision and delivery of key public services in all 216 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the country.
It was also to strengthen social accountability in development throughout the country to improve responsiveness in service delivery and development.
