The Ghana Mine Workers Union has sympathized with its members for their colleagues who lost their lives as a result of a mine accident on the premises of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited in Ahafo.
The accident occurred on Saturday April 7, which claimed six lives and injured two others, who were all workers of Consar Limited, a construction service company, currently working on the Newmont’s Ahafo Mill Expansion Project.
This was in a statement signed by Prince William Ankrah, the General Secretary of the Union and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
"We indeed find this accident extremely unfortunate considering the level of attention Newmont Ghana Gold Limited as a business attaches to matters of health and safety, and will stop at nothing to ensure that all employees work safely at all times," it added.
The statement extended the Union's heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families of their departed comrades and expressed the hope that the needed corrective measures would be put in place to ensure a safer and secured workplace.
"Whiles we are yet to ascertain the true cause of the accident from the ongoing investigations being conducted by the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission, we want to urge all our members across the mining sector, particularly in Newmont Ghana Gold Limited to uphold the highest standards of health and safety and make every effort to work safely at all times," the statement said.
