The Chairman of the Award Winners Association of Ghana and 2009 National Best Farmer, Mr Davis Narh Koboe, has said that for Ghana Beyond Aid to succeed, agriculture is very necessary describing it as a game changer.
He made these remarks during the grand opening ceremony of the ultra-modern Farmers Market in East-Legon in Accra on Friday, 24th August 2018
Speaking to the media, Mr Koboe called for the fruit and vegetable terminal as an international alternative where farmers can produce wholesome fruits and vegetables for export without problems. This, he said, will help to maximize profits.
He invited government to come on board and do more to help farmers by providing funding . "Government has created an enabling environment" he added.
The retail manager for The Farmer's Market, Mr Bernard Amponsah, said that their target is to provide a wide market for consumers with local and imported fruits and vegetables.
He added that 80 per cent of locally produced fruits and vegetables are exported. "We have hope in the agriculture industry and Ghana can grow in this sense. Agriculture is the sure way of promoting jobs" he added.
Mr Amponsah said they started as farmers who exported their produce but now have a viable market in Ghana. He said government and policy markers should not only pay attention to production but the entire agriculture chain by buying directly from farmers after production in order to provide them with a ready market and boost farmers' confidence and profits.
The Farmer's market which began two years ago has four branches in Accra with a wide range of fruits and vegetables carefully selected to offer customer satisfaction at an affordable cost. They also aim to promote healthy living by producing fresh food in a hygienic environment.
