The 10th Global Hand Washing Day has been observed by the Kalpohin Community in the Sagnerigu Municipality being led by the Afram Plains Development Organization (APDO) - Northern Regional Branch.
The programme was geared towards increasing awareness and understanding of hand washing with soap, as an easy, effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.
The organization met with pregnant and lactating mothers, nurses and mid- wives of the Kalpohin Health Center to implore them to practice good personal hygiene in order to avert possible disease outbreaks.
It was on the theme: 'Clean Hands; a Recipe for Health'.
Miss Beata Akanyani Awinpoka, the Programme's Director of APDO, said the organization chose the nurses, nursing and pregnant women as their target group because they were more prone to any disease outbreak that may occur in the community.
A presentation with a hand washing facility, the Veronica bucket, was used to educate the groups on how to wash their hands thoroughly with soap under running water before handling anything.
Miss Awinpoka expressed satisfaction with the number of participants who were able to demonstrate proper hand washing after the presentation and was hopeful it would go a long way to help reduce diseases in the community.
She said the organization would continue to visit schools, churches, mosques and lorry parks to raise awareness about the benefits of hand washing with soap, and encouraged the participants to take hand washing seriously and to help spread the news so as to reach a large number of people in the area.
Global Hand Washing Day is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness on the importance of hand washing with soap at critical times.
