Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority(GMA), Mr Kwame Owusu, has indicated that the Authority will be paying dividend to government for the first time and is also on an ongoing project to remove all the tree stamps in the Volta Lake to make water transport safe for the local people.
He also stated that under his supervision, the surveillance equipment used on the country's waters which had not been serviced for several years and was posing a threat, has been serviced giving the opportunity for the security services to secure the ports while providing Ghana with revenue from oil production.
Mr Owusu also noted that almost all of the National Service Persons posted to the Authority last year were offered employment while those enrolled to the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) program are being paid GHC1000 instead of the GHC700 proposed by government. He also made mention of policies to improve staff salaries, promotions and welfare and plans to build a 15 floor complex for the Authority in Accra, an 8 storey in Tema and a 6 storey in Takoradi through internally generated funds to enhance work and
efficiency.
He made these remarks at a press briefing organised at the Ghana Maritime Authority premises to dispel rumors some of which he said were from Kwame Asare Obeng also known as "Kwame A-Plus", a hiplife artise in Ghana.
He said that the press briefing was organised to provide the truth on text messages in the media from an 'extortionist' he disclosed as A-Plus. He said that the 'extortionist' in the texts, threatened to publish personal information about him and added "We are here to respond. We will not yield to people who want to extort. I will not yield".
He said that news going round on social media that 8 people had had lunch at a cost of GHC10,652.05 at the Luxe Suites Hotel is false. He said that the original document proves otherwise and asked the media to be circumspect in their reports. "If nothing at all, the original document says that 'for the cost of food supplied to the GMA during maritime meetings and stakeholders meetings'". He added that there are available records for the public.
Mr Owusu emphasized that the rumors were mere mischief from certain people. He said that an amount of GHC 135,000 was spent on an end-of-year party is true. However, it was held for 500 people and not a 100 as was reported by some sections of the media. He also addressed the issue of renovating a house saying that the land was acquired for the GMA and the house was renovated to a 4 bedroom house with other facilities befitting a
Director General.
He again noted that he was threatened with information on his passport which he said was unnecessary because he only corrected an error in his birth date to show that he is actually over 60 years which the previous passport did not show.
He challenged those who claimed he had a hotel in his hometown and lands in East Legon to provide evidence of this because they are untrue. Mr Owusu said that under his management, the Authority has raised GHC 99.2 million, with an expenditure of GHC 56.2 million giving the GMA a profit of GHC 43 million, an increase in revenue for his first year in office.
