The Science Set is a Ghanaian innovation that has made Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education easier. It is a small box, packed with electrical kits, that serves the purpose of a mobile science laboratory. Since its creation in 2015, the Science Set has been one of the most successful STEM innovations in the world.
Dext Technology Ltd is known for producing the Science Set. The Science Set is just the size of a textbook. However, it contains over 40 miniature science tools such as Diodes, Switches, Light, Resistors, Electrical circuits, and Capacitors, all of which can fit on a student’s desk. Each of its components can perform over 20 basic scientific experiments, making the Science Set dynamic.
Charles Ofori Antipem is a co-founder of Dext Technology Ltd. According to him, just the theoretical aspect of science taught over the years has achieved little impact. This he said inspired him to come up with the Science Set. "Getting the knowledge from the book is one thing but being able to experience it with experimentation is what is really important," he noted.
The science set now makes the teaching and learning of science more practical than before. By experimentation, students can try their hands on some of the things being taught in class.
As of 2020, five thousand schools in Ghana were using it. The Science Set can be used to build an alarm system, switch circuits, and even a mini robot that can walk. In the wake of Covid-19, some Ghanaian students used the Science Set to build electric taps to help curb the spread of the virus.
A UN report noted that sub-Saharan Africa will need around 2.5 million engineers to meet its sustainable development goal (SDG) of improving access to clean water and sanitation. This innovation, therefore, comes to improve STEM education and training in the sub-region. The Science Set also helps to clear many misconceptions about science and encourages African students to pursue careers in STEM fields.
A member of the Ghana Science Association, Dr. Thomas Tagoe noted that instilling in children a love of science was particularly important as the country did not have enough engineers and IT specialists. "It means we could move away from being a developing country to a place that's really known for its expertise in science", he noted.
Aside from Ghana, people in other parts of the world use the Science Set.
Students in countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Germany, and the United States perform experiments using the Science Set. Due to the quality of the product, Dext Technology Ltd secured a deal with the Royal Academy of Engineering, in the UK to supply kits to 500 schools.
The Science set is considered a significant invention, especially in the 2020s where STEM is increasingly gaining global recognition as a catalyst for socio-economic development.
