Well established farmers have been urged to set up demonstration farms to train the youth interested in farming as a vocation in modern methods.
Nana Kwaku Nsiah of Kuma Farms and the 2004 National Best Farmer, when he visited Ambrose Farms, an aquaculture farm, at Assin Adiembra near Assin Foso in the Central Region.
He said the time had come for farming to be taken as a major income-generating endeavour just like any other venture.
"The youth who want to take to farming must get a place where they can receive proper training on the job," he said and threw a challenge to past winners of the prestigious National Best Farmer award to take up the initiative.
"It is not enough to win national awards. Others must also benefit from their experience," he stated.
Nana Nsiah appealed to Agriculture Extension Agents to organise in-service training for farmers on modern methods.
Madam Doris Kumah, wife of Nana Nsiah appealed to women to go into "big time" farming also and commended Mr Derrick Owusu Ambrose, a pharmacist at the Saltpond District Hospital for establishing the farm and appealed to other workers to emulate him.
Mr Eric Ambrose Owusu, Manager of the Farm, said tilapia fingerlings imported from Singapore was being produced at the farm for those interested in fish farming.
