Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kwaku Amoako, Brong Ahafo Regional Unit Commander of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DVVSU) expressed concern about the increasing number of divorce cases in the Region.
He said the Unit, since the beginning of the year had recorded 15 divorce cases and attributed the major causes to maltreatment, harassment and irresponsibility on the part of the husbands.
The Unit Commander disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Sunyani.
The increasing divorce cases would have serious effects on children as they would lack good parental care and love, he observed, adding that taking custody of the children also became a problem for both parents.
He said most of the social vices being witnessed in the society in recent times stemmed from some of these cases and if care was not taken to bring the situation under control, the whole nation stood to be affected.
ASP Amoako said even though his Unit offered counselling and education to would-be-divorcees, it behoved all to give support to married couples to sustain the marriage and advised the married women who insisted on divorce because of compensation to desist from the practice.
He also stressed the high incidence of teenage pregnancy, child maintenance, husband snatching and defilement in the Region.
The Unit Commander advised parents to monitor the movement of their teenage girls and also question them on things, which were not provided them by the parents themselves.
ASP Amoako expressed regret that in spite of the contribution being made by the Unit to the society, it was saddled with problems such as the lack of good facilities and financial constraints.
He appealed to individuals and other well-meaning organizations to assist the Unit in cash and in kind to enable it to run efficiently.
