The African Lion 2025 exercise held in Tamale has ended with a call to improve skills in security across the country.
Colonel Frank Gyabi-Abrokwah, the Northern Command Operations Officer at Ghana Armed Forces said the African Lion 2025 was the United States Africa Command’s largest annual exercise aimed at improving interoperability with partner nations and supported the US military strategic readiness to respond to crises and contingencies in Africa.
He said this year’s exercise was replicated in Ghana, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia for the period from May 5 to May 16 2025, was to enhance capacity, lethality, and readiness of multinational partners and strengthen cooperation to successfully lead and execute regional security initiatives.
He explained that, this year’s exercise in Ghana focused on academics, staff planning and intelligence training and Medical Civic Action Programme (MEDCAP), and sought to train staff on the Military Decision Making Process, Joint Planning Process, Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance among others.
Col Gyabi-Abrokwah said the exercise would also played into the objectives of the Accra Initiative and operation enhance Koudanlgou and also helped to strengthen the shared defence capabilities that was aimed at dealing with transnational threats and violent extremist groups which is of common good to Ghana, African partners and the US.
“The threat to the Sahel region is imminent, realistic and dangerous hence the need for such partnerships to continue to enhance training activities in readiness to secure the Northern frontiers of the country.
“I am therefore certain that the exercise has been useful to all participants and I look forward to mutual benefits to the Ghana Armed Forces and the United State Army”. He said
Lt Col Obadiah Brians, of the US Army Southern European Task Force, Africa said this year, African Lion 2025 took place in Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, and in Ghana with over 50 nations and 10,000 troops conducting dynamic and collaborative training, to grow and build the Soldiers and Airmen capacities as well as their ability to work together.
“Their time here was focused on Intelligence training and the Joint Planning Process. They’ve learnt planning methodologies and gained a better understanding of War fighting functions”, he stated.
