The Board and Management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) have undertaken a strategic tour of selected regional airports as part of efforts to assess operational performance, identify infrastructure gaps, and align airport development with Ghana’s broader economic and connectivity objectives.
Led by Board Chairman, Hon. James Agalga, and Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Opare, the delegation began the tour at Tamale International Airport, where they engaged frontline staff and inspected critical operational and technical facilities.
The visit focused on service delivery standards, safety systems, and capacity constraints, as regional airports continue to play a growing role in domestic travel, cargo movement, and regional economic integration.

The team later travelled to Bolgatanga to inspect the 4,362-acre site designated for the proposed Upper East Regional Airport, a project expected to improve air connectivity in northern Ghana and unlock new economic opportunities across the Upper East Region.
The inspection was conducted with the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, and the Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, alongside technical officials from the Authority.

During stakeholder engagements, GACL and government representatives reaffirmed their commitment to delivering the airport project, describing it as a key infrastructure investment aligned with the President’s pledge to enhance regional inclusion and balanced national development.
Officials indicated that work is ongoing to complete the requisite technical, regulatory, and planning processes ahead of construction.

Expanding regional airport infrastructure could support trade facilitation, tourism, agribusiness logistics, and emergency services, while reducing travel times and costs for businesses and households in underserved regions.
However, the economic viability of new airports will depend on traffic demand, airline participation, and complementary investments in road networks and commercial activity.
GACL says insights from the tour will inform investment prioritisation and operational improvements across its airport network, as the company positions aviation infrastructure as a catalyst for regional growth and national economic transformation.
