Residents of Adogonno near Nungua in the Ledzokuku-Krowor Constituency were on Wednesday morning thrown into a state
of mourning when a shuttle train from Sakumono Village run over a 23-year
old deaf and dumb man killing him instantly.
Emmanuel Kassim, the victim was said to be walking on the railway which runs between Adogonno and Buade at 0630 hours when the train which was heading towards Accra knocked him near the Queensland International School.
Mr Eric Afari, an eyewitness told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the scene that Kassim's body was divided into two by the train dragging the lower part of the body about 150 meters from the accident spot.
According to him the unusual noise made by the train attracted residents to the scene, noting however that the driver of the train did not attend to the victim even after stopping at its next stop which was not too far from the scene.
At the time of the visit, the police had already taken the body from the scene but remnant pieces of the victim's body were seen on the railway.
Superintendent Godson Nyarko Amoah, Nungua Police District Commander later told the press that the accident was reported to the police at about 1000 hours by Staff Sergeant John Appiah, father of the victim.
Supt. Amoah who is also the Kpeshie Divisional MTTU Commander noted that the victim who was an employee of Kasapreko Distilleries situated on the Spintex road was on his way to work when the accident occurred.
He said the body has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary waiting for autopsy, adding that his outfit would investigate the accident.
Meanwhile Supt. Amoah has advised the general public to refrain from walking on railways explaining that trains cannot stop instantly.
