The Effutu Municipal Directorate of the National Youth Council (NYC) has assisted the Effutu Municipality and the Awutu-Senya District of the Central Region to form 40 Youth Clubs to educate their peers on issues like HIV/AIDS, drug abuse and child labour.
The Municipal Coordinator, Mr Emmanuel Martey, said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Saturday that inadequate resources were hampering the smooth operation of his office and the clubs.
He said in order to spearhead the development of the country there was the need to resource the council to continue to educate the youth on their responsibility to contribute towards national development.
According to him, the council was not able to organize enough programmes for the youth last year due to lack of funds.
He said despite the enormous contributions of the youth in national development, much attention had not been paid to them by past governments.
Mr Martey said most of the youth engaged in social vices like prostitution and drug abuse because they were not in decent employment.
He called for the establishment of a youth centre, a mini library and a website to provide relevant information for the youth.
Mr Martey also asked the government to resource the National Youth Centre to give the youth training in batik tie and dye, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and sewing to equip them with relevant skills for national development.
