A circuit court in Kumasi, on Friday imposed a fine of GH¢1,200a on a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), for careless driving and causing damage to a vehicle.
Lawrence Asem-Deitu, who pleaded guilty to the charge,
would go to jail for six years in default of payment of the fine.
Police Chief Inspector Appiah-Kubi, told the court presided over by Mr. D.P.W. Amedior that Asem-Deitu resided in New Suame in Kumasi.
Prosecution said that at 1900 hours on December 16, last year, Asem-Deitu was driving a Kia Sportage 4X4 car from Moshie Zongo towards Pankrono Estate in the city.
Chief Insp. Appiah-Kubi said on reaching a curve near Nobel Prince School, the convict, who was speeding, overtook an articulated truck which was negotiating a curve.
Prosecution said the Kia Sportage 4X4 car run into a VW Gulf which was moving towards Moshie Zongo from Pankrono Estate and was being driven by Mr. Amoh Badu Kwabena.
Chief Insp. Appiah-Kubi told the court that considerable damage was caused to the Kia Sportage 4X4 car and the VW Gulf.
Mr. Hans Koduah, counsel for Asem-Deitu, pleaded with the court to caution and discharge his client because he was a first time offender.
Counsel also said his client was ready to repair the VW Gulf that was damaged but said his client was not speeding neither did he over take the articulator truck.
