Lieutenant-General J. H. Smith (rtd), Minister of Defence on Thursday urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to offer some financial support to military garrisons within their jusridiction.
He said such support would ensure mutual benefits to them.
Lt-Gen. Smith made the call during a courtesy call on Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister as part of his working visit to the 66th Artillery Regiment in Ho.
He said efforts would be made for the administrator of GETFUND to assist garrison schools, which play a great role in education in the country.
Mr Amenowode commended the regiment for its onerous support to the Volta Regional Security Council in maintaining peace in the Region.
Lt. Col. Emmanuel Kotia, Outgoing Commanding Officer conducted the Minister round the various facilities and projects in the garrison.
These included the refurbished medical reception centre, day care centre, residential apartments under construction, water reservoir and mango plantation.
Lt. Gen Smith also visited the abandoned property of the erstwhile, Border Guards at Akoefe, near Ho to be used as a military facility in future.
Addressing a durbar organised for officers, men and civilian employees, Lt. Gen. Smith expressed appreciation at the high level of professionalism by the personnel.
He said cleanliness was refreshing and orderly and urged the personnel to remain faithful to their professional job of defending the nation at all times and never allow ethnic sentiments to influence their thoughts and actions.
Lt. Gen. Smith said he was collating problems of accommodation, military infrastructure and human resource development for the necessary action.
In an answer to concerns of poor salary for civilian employees, he said it would be reviewed and improved upon.
Lt. Col. Kotia said the regiment had very good relation ship with civilians in the area.
