The General Secretary of the Student Counsellors Association of Ghana (SCAG), Mr Augustine Adjei, has charged guidance and counselling coordinators in schools to address the psycho-emotional problems of students to enable them have good mind to study and become successful scholars.
This will also increase their academic performances and ensure higher standards of education in the country.
Mr Adjei, a level 300 student of the University of Education, Winneba, was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Winneba.
According to him, a number of students dropped out midway in their programmes, because they were not guided in the selection of career programmes right from the beginning.
He said such students later become 'useless' in society due to their inability to pursue careers which could have been relevant to them and the development of the nation.
Mr Adjei therefore urged policy makers to factor Guidance and Counselling as a programme into the curriculum of all tertiary institutions.
He underscored the need for all human organizations to have professional counsellors to address their social, emotional, psychological, vocational and personal needs.
It is therefore incumbent on the Guidance and Counselling unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to help reduce stress among students, adding that when people are under stress, output becomes low, which affects national development, he said.
