The Upper West Regional Secretariat of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) on Tuesday appealed to the government to appeal to the banks that are procuring buses for them to reduce their deposit rates for the union to acquire more buses for their branches.
"Alternatively, they should allow the union to serve as a guarantor to allow all branches to acquire the number of buses they want."
Mr. Nuhu Mahama, Industrial Relations Officer, told the journalists that the 20 percent deposit, which is GHC35, 000 that the Agricultural Development Bank is demanding was too much for struggling branches, particularly in the Upper West Region.
"We appeal to the NDC government to demonstrate its social democratic accolade by interceding for us to acquire more buses for the masses in the Upper West Region."
Mr. Mahama said the regional secretariat bought only two of the 150 buses that the government acquired for the union last year and that this is inadequate.
"The acquisition of the buses will in the long run bridge the development gap between the north and south," Mr. Nuhu said.
He commended the government for tarring the Wa/Bole/Bamboi road and appealed for the tarring of Sawla/Fufulso, Wa/Tumu/Bolgatanga and Jirapa/Lawra/Hamile roads.
On security, Mr. Mahama commended the Wa police for bringing sanity to the lorry stations through constant patrols and called on the Wa Municipal Assembly to support the police by providing security lights.
