A 43-year-old trader, who trafficked two children aged six and 12 years from Ghana to Cote d'Ivoire, was on Friday sentenced to eight years imprisonment in hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court.
Esther Amegah Amana, who was charged with human trafficking, pleaded not guilty.
The court presided over by Mrs Elizabeth Ankomah, however, found her guilty after the trial and convicted her accordingly.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mary Agbozo said in February 2008, Esther approached the complainant, who is a kente weaver, that she needed a house help.
The two women then went to Tsevie in Togo where they met the two children with their grandmother.
The prosecution said Esther promised to take care of the children and assist them to learn a trade.
Esther thereafter brought the children to Woe, near Keta, where the complainant lost contact with her.
Later the complainant met Esther at the Ashaiman Market and asked her to bring the two children but she failed.
On August 31, 2008, the complainant reported the matter to the Ministries Police and Esther was arrested at Tudu in Accra.
During investigations Esther's son, a student went to his grandmother residing in Cote d'Ivoire and brought the children and handed them to the Police.
