Madam Sarah Oforiwaa of the Nkoranza District Assembly, has called for the provision of incentives to motivate traditional birth attendants in the district.
Speaking as the Sub-Committee Chair for women and children in district, Madam Oforiwaa told the Ghana News Agency that the incentives would serve as an encouragement to the attendants since they currently faced many challenges and problems.
Specifically, she proposed items such as pieces of cloth, kerosene, lantern, torch light and a cash donation of say GH¢10 to each of the attendants at the end of every year.
Madam Oforiwaa commended the attendants for their voluntary services and urged them to continue to save the lives of pregnant women and their babies.
Mr Richard Kwasi Hinneh, Nkoranza South District Director of Health Service, lauded the suggestion which Madam Oforiwa gave on behalf of the Committee and said more than 100 traditional birth attendants were serving in Nkoranza North and Nkoranza South Districts.
He said the District Health Directorate was also offering the attendants the necessary capacity building support to keep them abreast with time.
Mr Hinneh emphasized the need for Assembly Members, unit committees and religious bodies to educate people on the importance of ante-natal and post-natal care.
He commended community-based surveillance volunteers in the area for their hard work and efforts in supporting health officials in providing quality health care.
