Members of the Upper West Regional Branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) have elected a 10-member executive at its Regional Delegates Conference, at Wa, to run the affairs of the association for the next four years.
Mr. Sebastian Sorinye was elected Chairman, with Miss Prisca Clare Ninwienah as the vice chairman. The Treasurer post went to Miss Justina Asima while Mr. Emmanuel N. Lolo took the trustee post.
Miss Comfort Nabugu was also elected representative of the GNATLAS, (Ladies Group) with Mrs. Marceline Faanye as the Basic Education Representative.
The Senior High Education Representative is Mr. Joseph Maliwiihi, while the Technical Education Representative is Mr. Prosper Banoe.
Mr. Vuurdie Simon is the Teacher Education Representative and Mr. Kenneth A. Yoho is the representative of the Education Administration.
They are expected to come out with programmes and activities to promote GNAT and the welfare of its members in the region.
Mr. Sorinye thanked members for electing them and called for their cooperation for the smooth implementation of GNAT's programmes in the region to benefit its members.
He noted that even though teachers continued to play an important role in the provision of human resources, less recognition and attention were given to them when their remuneration and conditions of service were compared to other categories of workers in the country.
Mr. Sorinye called for unity among the various teacher associations to fight for the common good of their members, saying: "It would not be in the best interest of our members if we see ourselves differently."
He said: My colleagues and I do not fear falling but we would want to fall and get up and see you (members) standing by us.
