A 28 year-old physically challenged man has been sentenced to four years imprisonment by a Bibiani Circuit Court for attempting to sell his younger brother for GH¢10,000.
Kwame Acheampong, with an amputated right leg, pleaded guilty to the offence.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Raymond Kofi Erzuah told the Court presided over by Mr Justice Emmanuel Ankamah that, the accused lived
with the victim, Kwasi Emmanuel, aged eight, and other blood relations at Ntum near Diaso in the Central Region.
He said on September 30, Acheampong informed his mother, Akosua Brema, that he was travelling to Prestea with his younger brother, Emmanuel, to
visit a friend.
The mother, he said, readily gave her consent and the accused took the boy to Sefwi Dwenase.
ASP Erzuah said while there, he solicited the support of a taxi cab driver to get a buyer for the victim.
Surprised at Achampong's request, the driver informed another person who feigned interest in the deal and alerted the police.
ASP Erzuah said the police arranged with the informant to meet with the accused and the victim at a drinking spot to seal the transaction.
At the agreed time, plain-clothed police officers were introduced to Acheampong as potential buyers and after some bargaining, they settled on
GH¢10,000.
ASP Erzuah said the policemen convinced the accused to go with them to Sefwi Wiaso to withdraw the money from the bank.
He was however taken straight to the police station.
