Three people who allegedly attempted to purchase an Avtomat Kalashnikov assault rifle (AK 47) from the police have appeared before an Accra Fast Track High Court presided over by Mr. Justice Senyo Dzomefe.
The accused persons, Romeo Mensah, Stanley Kubaliko and Isaac Dadzi pleaded not guilty and were remanded in police custody to re-appear on
December 10.
Inspector Joseph Benjamin Lomotey of the Nima Police, led by the prosecution, told the court that while on duty on May 29, this year, an informant approached him that some people wanted to buy AK47 rifles.
Witness said he feigned interest in the deal and arranged to meet them at the Obra spot near Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
Police Inspector Lomotey said before the meeting, he notified a colleague policeman to participate in the discussion during which he
(witness) informed the accused persons that the rifle could not be sold to them because it should be returned for inspection at the station, rather
they could rent it for 500 Ghana cedis a day.
He said it was during the deliberations that the accused persons were arrested and sent to Nima police station for investigations.
Police Corporal Joseph Abiatika, another witness told the court that on June 3, he had information that Romeo and Isaac were involved in the armed robbery at the Awudome branch of Mobile Max which resulted in the death of a sales girl as well as the robbery near Kwame Nkrumah circle.
