Accra would on Saturday gather at the St. Mary's Senior High School to light candles and share stories from the front lines of climate change as part of a worldwide day of action to avert
climate catastrophe.
A statement issued in Accra by the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation of the Catholic
Religious Congregation (JPIC) in Ghana, organizers of the candle light vigil, said the
participants at the programme would join their counterparts from 132 countries to urge to urge
world leaders to provide concrete action to prevent climate change.
The group said Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Madam Mary Robinson, former UN Human Rights Commissioner, would also lead a special vigil outside the climate negotiation headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Sister Maria Vilma of the Holy Spirit Missionary and a member of the online campaign
group who is advocating for Ghana's position on the issue, said the people of Ghana wanted a real deal from the meeting in Copenhagen.
"We need a deal that is ambitious enough to leave a planet safe for us all. Fair for the
poorest countries that did not cause the climate change but are suffering most from it and binding with real targets that can legally be enforced," she said.
Calls have been made for $200-billion climate financing to poor countries, reduction of all
Carbon emissions by 2015 and the legally binding negotiations which would be enforceable in most countries across the world.
